  • Introduction
It has been a while back with promises of a 99 minutes CD-R media but none ever surfaced. Over 6 months ago we already had offers of several companies who would supply us with the first samples but they never arrived. Now, since June 2000, the long awaited CD-R99 media has finally arrived for real!

To achieve the 99 minutes two known methods are used:

    • The CD-R spiral, which starts on the inside and ends on the outer part of the CD, is now even wound closer together, this method was also used to create CD-R80 media.
    • The CD-R will be Oversized/Overburned which results in an extra 4 minutes space.

Again these CD-R99 media do not comply to the CD Red-Book standard. If you experienced problems using CD-R80 media then forget about CD-R99 media as it will not work at all!

The German based Engelmann GmbH has been reporting that the new CD-R99 media will not be fully useable on all CD-Writer & CD-Readers. For now only the Mitsumi CR4804 & LG CED8080B/8083B CD-Writers can write up to 99:05 minutes without any problems. Others, like the Teac CD-W54 & PlexWriters, will not go past the 90 minutes limit and most will likely stop at around 84 minutes.

    Software Compatibility
For now CDRWin, Feurio!, DiskJuggler & CDRecord support writing up to 99 minutes but most likely all CD-R recording packages will be supporting the new media in the next few weeks!

Keep in mind that all CD-R99 media will be recognized as CD-R80 media which can be written up to 79:59 minutes, this is because 79:59 minutes was the maximum possible recording time. Going beyond this value will result in a negative track value (this is usually the cause that some software will fail to work!).

    Compatibility Problems
As it seems only a few CD-ReWriters can use the full 99 minutes, most can "only" go up to 90 minutes, checkout the following list from Disc4you:
